Physio Control Defibrillator Questions & Answers.

The LIFEPAK AED Range

  • LIFEPAK Express: entry level AED semi sutomatic model.

  • LIFEPAK CR Plus: Automatic, easy to use, for minimally trained, Infrequent user

  • LIFEPAK 1000 : Advanced AED technology with Manual Over ride capability for intermediate to advanced responders.

Q         Can anyone use an AED?

A         Yes – anyone who is minimally trained at Basic Life Support / AED Level; you do not have to be a Health Care Professional to be able to use an AED. The entry level LIFEPAK Express and CR Plus are  designed to be used by the minimally trained responder.

Q         Can they be used in a wet environment i.e. outside or by a swimming pool?

A         Yes – the LIFEPAK AED portfolio are ‘splash’ proof – they carry IXP factor ratings of 4 (LIFEPAK Express / CR Plus) and 5 (LIFEPAK  1000) when both electrodes and CHARGE-PAK are installed. It is  recommended to dry wet patients prior to defibrillation and always maintain your own safety as a responder first.

Q         What Energy is delivered by the LIFEPAK AEDs?

A         Biphasic Escalating Energy.  All AHA / ERC G2005 Compliant. Typical Adult Energy levels delivered at: 200 joules, 300 joules, 360 joules. Typical Child Energy levels delivered via Child / Infant Reduced Energy Electrodes at a reduced amount, approximately 50 joules (1st Shock),  75 joules (2nd Shock) and 86 joules (3rd Shock) – intended for children aged 8 years and below or 25kg(55lbs).

Q         What age can they be used on?

A         Any age group – however, it is advised to use Child / Infant Reduced Energy Electrodes on children under 8 years of age.  If you do not have Child Electrodes, then continue use of the AED with Adult electrodes as delivering a Shock is the only treatment of choice for a shockable heart rhythm – delivering full energy in these circumstances is supported by the European Resuscitation Council.

Q         Are they safe and not going to cause more hard to the patient?

AEDs are completely safe and will only deliver a shock to the patient if required – if the heart rhythm does not require a shock then the AED will not deliver any energy and will advise the responder on the next action to be taken.

        Do the devices need servicing?

A          The Physio-Control AED portfolio all come with a 5-year warranty.  The devices will carry out daily, weekly self-tests and also carry out a self test in the event of switching on the device. The ‘OK’ icon will clearly be visible in the display screen to indicate the unit is working and ready to be used. If the ‘Service’ indicator is highlighted, please contact us to arrange for an engineer to inspect your device.

What battery / charging system do the AEDs use?

A          All LIFEPAK AEDs are battery operated and cannot be charged by AC Power.  The LIFEPAK CR Plus / Express utilise both an internal battery and a unique CHARGE-PAK system – this should be replaced after use or every two years with the electrodes.  The LIFEPAK 500 / 1000 operate using non-rechargeable battery.
