Cardiovascular Pressure Catheters

Millar MPVS Ultra Pressure Volume Conductance System For Cardiovascular Research.

The Millar MPVS Ultra simultaneously and continuously measures high-fidelity left ventricular pressure and relative volume from the intact beating hearts of small and large animals such as transgenic mice and rats. Pressure and volume signals can be plotted against each other in real time, generating the characteristic P-V loops that are an excellent illustration of the cardiac cycle in normal and diseased conditions of the living heart.

P-V loops may be captured during pharmacologic, therapeutic, and haemodynamic interventions, allowing comprehensive evaluation of the fundamental mechanical properties of the heart.

The MPVS Ultra can be used for the following studies:-

  • Baseline P-V loop analysis
  • Occlusion P-V loop analysis
  • Phenotype gene manipulations
  • Cardiac hypertrophy
  • Cardiac failure
  • Cardiovascular remodelling
  • Toxicology
  • Pharmacology (rapid drug screening)

The MPVS Ultra System consists of the following system components:-

  • Millar Mikro-Tip® P-V catheters
  • P-V signal conditioning hardware with innovative software-controlled user interface
  • PVAN Ultra™ data analysis software
  • Rho cuvette for volume calibration
  • Data acquisition system (DAQ) systems such as the PowerLab
  • Connection cables
  • Computer (not included)

MPVS Ultra Control Interface

The MPVS Ultra is the first and only pressure-volume system to be software-controlled. The user can manage catheter configuration, calibrate all signals, and measure conductivity and resistivity using the Rho cuvette with the graphical interface.

Catheter Configuration

To streamline studies, the user can select the appropriate catheter model from a preloaded list of catalogue catheters or quickly create an entry for a custom model. Configurations can be saved and easily loaded for future studies. Dynamic adjustment of the number of active segments allows for an optimal volume signal in each procedure.

Catheter Calibration

The Catheter Calibration screen allows the user to electronically calibrate the pressure, volume, and ECG signals

RHO Cuvette

Conductivity, resistivity, and the temperature of a blood sample are measured with one click.

The PVR-1045 is the newest addition to Millar's ultra miniature catheters. It has a catheter tip size of 1F (0.33mm) and a catheter body size of just 0.8F (0.27mm). The smaller diameter minimizes the obstruction of blood flow in the vessel and allows for improved surgical access to the right ventricle, pulmonary artery and peripheral areas.

PVAN Ultra Data Analysis Software.

PVAN opens the text files generated by the data acquisition software and applies a variety of algorithms to the P-V data to calculate over thirty different hemodynamic parameters.

The calculated hemodynamic parameters serve as indicators of cardiovascular performance in response to different interventions (genetic mutations, drugs, occlusions, etc.). PVAN offers the researcher the opportunity to convert data to units of true volume if the data were recorded in Relative Volume Units (RVU).

PVAN contains an intuitive user menu offering easy access to a variety of displays and calculation tables for many different cardiovascular parameters. A saline calibration feature allows the user to obtain a value for the parallel conductance volume contribution of the myocardium.

Data may be easily exported to spreadsheets or text files, and graphical information can be placed into presentations or papers for publication.

Data acquisition system .

We recommend the AD Instruments 16 channel PowerLab data acquisition system for use with the Ultra. The PowerLab is a high-performance data acquisition system suitable for a wide range of research applications including human and animal physiology, pharmacology, neurophysiology, biology, zoology, biochemistry, and biomedical engineering.

The unit is capable of recording from very slow to very fast speeds (up to 200 000 samples per second continuously to disk), and is compatible with instruments, signal conditioners and transducers carried by ADInstruments, as well as many other brands. In addition to standard BNC inputs, the PowerLab features Pod ports that allow direct connection to Pod signal conditioners and appropriate transducers.

The PowerLab features:
- General-purpose analog input channels (BNC and Pod port DIN connectors)
- Independent stimulator outputs
- External trigger input and signal triggering
- Wide range of low-pass filters
- AC or DC coupling
- Digital inputs and outputs for external instrument control
- SCSI and USB interface for connection to Windows and MacOS computers

The PowerLab is shipped with PowerLab software (Labchart, Scope, and Chart Extensions) and associated manuals and cables.
The Labchart data acquisition software features:-

  • Customizable graphical user interface
  • Four to eight channels of analog input
  • USB output
  • Compatibility with peripheral measuring devices
  • Scrolling strip chart display of pressure and
    volume waveforms
  • Real-time display of P-V loops
