Mercury Free Manual Sphygmomanometers

In 1905 the Russian Dr Nikolai Korotkoff introduced the theory of blood pressure measurement listening for the first and fifth "Korotkoff" sounds to record systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Since then blood pressure measurement using the "Korotkoff" or "auscultatory" technique with a stethoscope and Mercury column has been regarded as the Gold Standard by healthcare professionals. Recent concerns about the environmental impact and toxicity of Mercury has led to the introduction of new products which still allow the user to record blood pressure manually but are completely environmentally friendly.

MDA/2005/069 - Blood pressure monitors and sphygmomanometers. The Committee on Blood Pressure Monitoring in Clinical Practice was established by the Chief Medical Officer to address concerns regarding the use of mercury sphygmomanometers and the accuracy of alternatives. The committee have produced a report with recommendations. One of the recommendations is that

"Auscultation as a method of determining blood pressure should continue to be taught to healthcare workers as appropriate. Calibrated non-mercury devices, which do not rely on oscillometry, should be made available in all clinical areas. These will be used to check oscillometric results and other non auscultatory alternative blood pressure measurement determination on individual patients. These devices should also be used in clinical conditions where these alternative methods may be inappropriate e.g. arrhythmia, pre eclampsia or specific vascular disease."
