Mercury Free Manual Blood Pressure Monitors

AND UM-101

With the UM-101 you record blood pressure just like a Mercury column using a stethoscope and listening for Korotkoff sounds.

The A&D UM-101 Mercury-Free Manual Sphygmomanometer recently passed a full clinical validation study according to the European Society of Hypertension International Protocol and is suitable for use within a clinical environment.

Validation of the A&D UM-101 Professional Device for Office BP Measurement According to the International Protocol – G. Stergiou, P. Giovas, C. Gkinos, D. Tzamouranis; Hypertension Center, 3rd University Dept. Medicine, Soitria Hospital, Athens, Greece published at the European Society Hypertension meeting Milan 15-17 June 2007

The story and development of the UM-101 took place over a period of almost 2 years. From an early stage and following feedback from healthcare professionals it was decided that the function of the unit should be identical (with some subtle improvements) to the existing mercury sphygmomanometer so that a user did not have to alter his/her working habits.

By talking to Nurses and Doctors it became clear that when they use their sphygmomanometers listening for Korotokov sounds means more than simply measuring blood pressure. It can be a means of communication between a nurse or doctor and his/her patient.

The development of the UM-101 also allowed A&D to implement improvements over existing sphygmomanometers. For instance, the existing mercury column is slow to respond to pumping and there is a time lapse between the pump and the pressure indication on the scale because of the mass of the mercury. This can lead to pumping up to unnecessarily high pressure levels.

There was also room for aesthetic improvement to make the new product lighter and ergonomically more modern in appearance. Technical challenges and the need for an innovative design faced the A&D R&D team. They knew that conventional LCD’s or liquid crystal displays are too slow to show changes in pressurization in real time but managed to overcome this and other technical difficulties.

2006 was the 101st year of the discovery of Korotkov sounds and we hope that the UM-101 will contribute to Korotkov’s discovery and establish itself as a vital instrument in the environmentally conscious world of the 21st century.

Key features of the UM-101

  • Auscultatory blood pressure measurement without mercury.
  • Manual sphygmomanometer with an easy to read liquid crystal display
  • Lifetime counter function shows the number of hours the device has been in use and helps to determine when service is necessary
  • User adjustable deflation using thumb wheel.
  • Vertical LCD display is easy to read and graduated just like a Mercury column.
  • Very robust
  • Numerical display shows pressure display during inflation and deflation
  • When a measurement is completed patient pulse rate is displayed.
  • Supplied complete with adult cuff, bulb, alkaline batteries, user instructions and two-year warranty.
  • Long battery life from two 1.5 volt batteries.

MHRA guidance, Ref. MDA/2005/069, states that “Calibrated non-mercury devices, which do not rely on oscillometry, should be made available in all clinical areas” it also states that “In those clinical conditions where oscillometry is inappropriate (e.g. arrhythmias, pre-eclampsia and certain vascular diseases) an alternative method of pressure measurement (auscultation, arterial cannulation) should be used”. The UM-101 meets this requirement. Is your Mercury Sphygmomanometer accurate?
