Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring

Do Doctors cause blood pressure to rise?

This is the claim of a recent article that appeared on the BBC website on Friday 7th May 2010. The article looked at the role ambulatory blood pressure monitoring can play in the diagnosis of "White Coat Hypertension".

In the article Professor Arduino Mangoni, from the University of Aberdeen states that "Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is the tool of choice to correctly diagnose high blood pressure."

ABPM-05 Meditech pictureHe goes on to say "Clearly, if you're going to be treating a person for the rest of their life, you want to get the readings right, and often the reading in the doctor's office is much higher."

In 2001, 90 million prescriptions for blood pressure lowering drugs were issued by the NHS at a cost of £840 million
so there is a clear financial benefit to reduce incorrectly diagnosed hypertensives and save the NHS money.

"Current guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension don't pay enough attention to the role of ambulatory monitoring, often adopting a one- size-fits-all approach which doesn't properly address different patient groups."
