Micro Medical have been developing spirometers for over
20 years. They were the first company to use a turbine
in their spirometer . Their accuracy is unaffected by
temperature, humidity and very importantly air pressure.
Micro Medical spirometers can be used anywhere in the
world without need for re-calibration.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is
characterised by airflow obstruction. The airflow
obstruction is usually
progressive, not fully reversible,
does not change markedly over several months
and is
predominantly caused by
smoking.
The NICE guidelines recommend that spirometry is
performed on patients over the age of 35
who have a risk factor (generally smoking) and who
present with exertion breathlessness, chronic cough,
regular
sputum production, frequent winter ‘bronchitis’ or
wheeze.
The
presence of airflow obstruction should be confirmed by
performing spirometry.
Spirometry helps differentiate COPD from asthma and
allows for assessment of severity and treatment of COPD.
It can also assist in the diagnosis of other causes of
dyspnoea.
